Liberty towing horse trailer?

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited with a factory tow package. I am wondering if it can tow a horse trailer with one horse in it. I have heard that brenderup trailers can be towed by a Liberty, but want to make sure. and is the factory installed hitch strong enough for horse trailer towing? Please help, I caan't get answers anywhere! Thanks!

I don't know very much about liberty's but how big is the horse trailer, 2 horse or bigger and do you have trailer brakes. I have towed a small horse trailer with horses in it with an Explorer and had no problems and towed a 16' empty horse trailer as well but that was a little more tricky.

Your Liberty is rated to tow 5000 lbs, I believe. Trailer brakes will be necessary on a horse trailer (they are heavy).

How much does the trailer weigh, loaded and ready for the road?

There's your answer.

Yeah, the type of trailer and what you are carrying does not matter much at all. What matters is the weight of the trailer.

Wouldn't worry about the 'one horse' - Moved my bro's pedigree herd today, this pic I had four Swiss Simmental breeding cows on board, just take your time & keep your speed down, no probs

Yes it does. You can not balance when it is horses in a trailer like you could a regular trailer, also horse can move shifting the weight. It may not be that noticeable with only two horses though.

As far as pulling with a liberty, maybe for shore distances and lower speeds. If you want to do it for any distance on a freeway I would think about using a weight distributing hitch.

I have had a Grand for a while and it is rated at 5k. I bought a camper that weighed 2700 empty, maybe 3100lbs loaded. At any speed above 60 the trailer would start to say. Plus I had the I6 and it lacked power. I towed with it about year. It sucked so bad I traded it in on a full size conversion van rated at towing 7k, (with weight distributing hitch).

If you get the brenderup trailer, it can do it. I'm getting one and will use my 1977 cj7, but I do have a 360 in it.

One quick way to find out :

Hook the trailer up to your Liberty, stack 1,110 pounds of sand bags in the middle of it, take the combo up to 55mph.

Yank the steering wheel and slam on the brakes.

If you and the Jeep survive the maneuver, go ahead and load up the horse. If not, you've got your answer.

My personal opinion is no way in hell. The Liberty is an underpowered replacement for the XJ Cherokee, and it was miserably ill equipped for towing anything more than a push mower.

Although smaller then a horse trailer, I've towed a U-haul trailer over the Rockies to the Midwest. Trailer wasn't loaded, but about 1500 lbs. It towed fine, was stable, stopped fine and could do 70 mph. I could see doubling the weight for short distances with keeping the speed down, and as long as the trailer had it's own brakes. Funny thing is I actually had better MPG over I-70 through Colorado then from Kansas to Indiana. What I really admired about towing with the Liberty is that mine has SelecTrac, which I kept the full-time four-wheel drive setting engaged due to the mixed winter road conditions. It was nice having that option...

Big difference in an unloaded trailer and one that has 1000 pounds wandering around unsecured inside. Or 2000. I really have no idea what a horse weighs I just know unsecured loads can really mess with you, even larger water tanks that aren't full enough to keep slosh down.

I towed a 3500lb cargo trailer cross country with my TJ, yes way too much. I also towed about 2,300lbs (including trailer with a few calves in it) to the sale barn, about 45 minutes. Towing the calves was MUCH more difficult then pulling the overloaded trailer.

Over here, Germans will tow anything with anything. I see 3 series BMW's towing dual horse trailers all the time. It is not safe and I wouldn't recommend doing it but it can be done. A decent sized horse weighs about 1K. That is half a ton unrestrained moving around in the trailer. I wouldn't recommend it.
