Hitch Heigth

I am buying a trailer to haul my Jeep tomorrow and need to figure out how much drop I need for a ball mount. The trailer sits level with the top of the coupler 18 inches off the ground. The receiver on my truck is 23 inches from the ground to the center of the two inch receiver. If I buy a six inch drop ball mount where is it measured from? Top of the two inch shank to the top of the flat part where the ball bolt through? I really don't know and want this thing to tow REALLY level. Any thoughts on how a drop ball mount is measured?

etrailer quick guide should atleast start to answer your question.

You want to see how much your tow rig will sag with the proper tongue weight and minus that out of the calculated drop.

The way I did it: I bought a cheap adjustable ball mount from HF. Then loaded up the trailer with the jeep to find the position that gave me ~13% tongue weight and adjusted the ball mount untill the trailer was about level. Figured out what drop I needed and bought a proper ball mount.

You have to determine the amount your receiver is going down when you load the tongue weight on the tow vehicle. Here's an explanation of how to do it:

Then follow the measurement instructions here:
