Extra Trailer Lights...

I was wondering if anyone has put lights that shine down along the side of the trailer to light up the tires and the side of the road to help see the edge of the road better. I was thinking about putting liscense plate lights that shine down between my wheels to shine down to help at night, or right in front of the front tire. any ideas? Just was a thought.

You might want to check with the dot about the legality of something like this. I am not sure if there are laws mentioning this type of trailer lighting but it would be bad to do it and find out later that it is illegal.

My trailer has the wheels outside the bed. It came with the turn / brake lights behind the wheel and marker lights on the front corner of the bed.

When I re-wired the trailer I added amber marker lights in front of the wheels. It is VERY helpful at night. I can see the trailer centered between the lines. I can also see clearance passing objects.

One other problem when towing is the dough-heads that jump into the lane, once my vehicle clears their front bumper. It doesn't matter, to them, that a trailer is attached to my hitch. I think the added marker lamps helps to increase the trailer visibility.

i ended up adding 4 small brake lights and 4 small amber lights on the side. I think i'm going to add some amber lights on the rear for running lights.

It may be that additional running lights, added to the rear edge of the trailer, must be red and not amber. That should be verified.

Rear corner and any rear facing lights must be red. The rest must be amber. and I am not aware of a state that would let you put lights facing down to light up the road.

The lights I added in front of my wheels have the normal horizontal orientation, but the projection angle is sufficient to illuminate the lane markers, which I find useful.

Without those lights I have almost no visibility of the trailer at night, except when passing street lights, so this addition works for me.
