Actually some of the newest diesels to come are cleaner than the ones that run on gas.

Actually diesel emissions (from the last 10 years or so) are cleaner for a human to inhale than a gas engine. You might want to check on your facts before you troll. I will continue to idle and drive my diesel every day just for you.

You must be kidding. So, I suppose that the entire industry change to ultra low sulfer was all for nothing. And carbin filters and after treatment is a waist. I supose that they have made it ileagle to idle diesels in many states just because it is good for you. Small particle diesel emissions are a serious problem. If you are concidering buying one and wanting to know fhe facts about diesels these are some of the facts you may or may not want to consider.

All the misspellings aside, there's a trade-off with diesel. Better mileage, but it takes more crude to make diesel than gas. Fewer greenhouse gasses, but more particulate etc etc. And of course idling anything all night is nothing but waste and emissions since engines tend to be really inefficient at idle. I don't have the need for a bigger tow rig right now, but I'm eagerly awaiting the upcoming diesel 1/2 tons.

Sorry, your lack of basic grammar skills makes it impossible for me to understand what you are saying. It must be all the diesel exhaust you breathe.

I think the above quote needs some explanation. When crude is processed, each barrel of crude yields a fixed amount of each type of petroleum product.

There is more gasoline made from a barrel of crude than there is diesel, but no more crude is used to make it or the diesel. Each 42 gallon barrel of crude yields 9.21 gallons of diesel and 19.5 gallons of gas. And, they get a bunch of other stuff. But I don't think it is exactly right to say that it takes more crude to make diesel since that implies that if the crude wasn't used to make the diesel it would be made into something else.

I know this sounds a bit picky, but as a big diesel fan I don't want anyone to think that diesel production is in some way irresponsible or environmentally negative.

Here's a simple explanation of the cracking of crude into its components:

So that is all you've got. That is your big defense to the issue.
Sorry you had to find out that your truck has a down side that you cant fix.

Unless you live in Indianapolis, You will be doing it for your family and your neighbors. You could suck in some second hand smoke while you are at it.

My 6.7 dodge smells like a propane grill and has an exhaust that you can touch the inside of the exhaust pipe and keep your hand as clean as it was when you put it in. the 6 speed automatic is awsome . As for asking about the trucks in general. Over time I think the 7.3 has less parts that need to be replaced. As for seat of the pants driving the 5.9's feel way more powerful when towing. All the newer trucks will need parts replaced sooner then the older ones as they have them doing more work, injectors squrting 2 to 3 times. more complex parts, way higher rail pressure, regens. Regens are when the trucks waste fuel to get the exhaust gas temps to around 1400 degrees to clean the dpf (diesel partical filter) out. If you need info on dodges you can go to. http://www.turbodieselregister.com/ they have alot of info on dodges. or http://www.cumminsforum.com/
the ford site i lke is http://www.superdutydiesel.com/

Kris Kris, this is all common knowledge to anyone with half a brain and an internet connection. People driving diesel trucks are a very small part of the problem. The larger problem is how we generate our power here in the US. Don't expect to be welcomed with open arms when you come into a thread and start telling people how to drive their trucks and what trucks they should buy.

As far as the original topic, I think either the 7.3 or the 5.9 are both good motors. I would go where you can get the best price. My brother-in-law has been a tech at a chevy dealer since 1974 and he told me that they have all kind of problems with the new Duramax trucks. One thing he mentioned was injectors, though I don't recall all the details. His advice was to stay away from the Duramax. I was actually thinking about a duramax when I purchased back in July and that is how i came to discuss this with him. This is the newer generation duramax and I think earlier models were more reliable. If you are considering duramax seriously, I will call him and talk to him more about this and give you details. My brother and another brother-in-law work construction and drive company trucks which have always been Ford. All the way back to the early 90s they have had very very few problems with the trucks. They typically put 150k on them and then the company will purchase new trucks. I also have a couple of friends with both 12 and 24v cummins and they swear by them. So Pstroke or Cummins and go where you can get the best price would be my suggestion.

Also, with regard to MPG, the numbers quoted here seem high to me. In general expect between 15-20 mpg out of the trucks when you are not towing. Depeding on load and driving situation, expect to take about a 3-5mpg hit when hauling. Again very general here, but don't expect to buy a large displacement turbo diesel and get 25mpg regularly. Of course if you live in an area with cold winters like around here, expect to take about a 10% hit in MPG while running on winter blended diesel.

Winter blend gas is just as bad. I lose about 40 miles per tank as soon as they do the switch. Figure winter blend is supposed to reduce emissions by what, 5%? But I have to burn 14% more fuel. That makes sense.

Isn't this what what the thread starter was asking for?
I am only saying that along with all of the other things to consider that this is something that you may or may not want to think about when you are considering buying a truck. The small particle diesel emissions are the #1 reason that most cities do not meet minimum air quality standards. Look it up. Like it or not, it is the #1 reason! This may or may not mean something to you. The original poster was looking for information to conceder before they purchased.
Now the new dodges already meet the 2010 standards and while they are very clean the used trucks on the market are not.

I don't think so. I think he was asking pretty much from an economical standpoint if it was a good idea to buy a diesel and then questioning which type of truck he should go with. Aside from that, your post seemed condescending and forceful and I think that is why people reacted the way they did as well. I am not going to get into a debate about air pollution as this is a towing and tow rig forum.
