Diesel or Not

What do you all think of buying a diesel now? Im looking to be able to drive my jeep just offroad since the upgrades I put on it, I dont feel comfortable driving it to rausch and such and drive it home since its my DD. are diesel prices expected to skyrocket? I know in the winter they go up around a dollar but I dont want to buy a diesel and have diesel go up beyond belief. Im looking at 7.3 since the fuel milage, and their reliability

Diesel prices are already about a buck higher than gas prices at the moment. With the initial cost and the increased fuel cost, the increase in mileage may not be a benefit to you unless you are towing more frequently than the monthly trip to rausch. I Daily Drive a Ram 2500 CTD with a 6-speed, and the increased cost hurts, but It gets 2x the miliage my old 1500 gasser did when towing.

Diesel makes sense now and has throughout this crisis. Longer life, lower maintainance costs and better mileage add up to a better deal. Most important to me however is the driving pleasure of a diesel vs. a gasser. The difference between a 2500CDT and a 5.7 Hemi is no comparison. Ask beachin which he'd rather drive with a load through the mountains.

For my part, my K2500 454 Burb got 5mpg with a 10k load. That can't work at any difference in fuel price. My Volvo (Cat 3116), get 12mpg loaded, and it is a 33000gvw truck weighing 14000 unloaded.

In the long term, since diesel is cheaper to make than gas, the price will eventually come back to earth.

ok so ive been looking and i found a 2001 with 160,000 for around 9, can get a 100,000 5 yr warrenty for about another 1,000. im lookin into a diesel mostly because ive put alot of mods on my jeep it 8.8 arb and all, but since its my DD, im scared to break it and not be able to drive it home. diesel prices is my largest fear. i know the prices go up during winter but will the prices stay around the same as they do now so will they sky rocket. im scared to buy a diesel then have it go up. how are the 01 24 value 2500s. strong? reliable? good with cold starts?

My dad's 6.6L duramax diesel is awesome. it's a 3500 crew cab dually and it gets about 26 mpg highway and 20-22 in the city. With a programmer on it you can get about 28-30 higway and 24-26 city. and on our lat trip to North Carolina (from houston, tx) we averaged 19.3 mpg going 80mph and goin up mountains.
and you can pull anything you want.

my vote is the duramax

if youre that scared about prices you could always make your own bio diesel. i know its expensive to get going but in the long run youd save money. not sure how much work it is/what youre willing to do either.

both are well known and 7.3 owners replace the 7.3 with a 5.9 when the 7.3 give out

i was looking at some dodge 2500 diesels and i like the look when they look a little lifted. they are all stock, is that something from the factory? i dont like a low truck but some of them look all stock suspension. since the one im looking at is a long bed. is 13,900 with 67000 miles a good price?

The diesels you are looking at are all 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. The 1/2 ton truck is lower. A 3/4 ton gas truck will also look lifted.
