D35 for a smoker trailer?

I have an extra d35 axle that I want to make a smoker trailer with. Going to cut all the brackets off with the plasma cutter an weld on new perches for leaf springs. My question is what sort of pinion angle should I use for an axle that is not being driven? Also can I mount the axle back wards and tow it at highway speeds? I want to plasma a pigs head out of 1/4" and weld it to the yoke so it spins as I'm driving down the road.

Thanks,
Mike

Maybe not the pigs head, that would suck to have it break off going down the road.

It's probably too heavy because it still has the center section. You can find a nice 3500 lb axle for under $250

Pinion angle?? there's no driveshaft. Maybe you can find a front axle out of a 2WD cherokee at the junkyard.

you'd probably be better off finding a 2wd front beam from an old XJ or a regular trailer axle and selling the turd.

w/o proper oiling, i imagine the gears would burn up eventually. maybe if you took the ring gear out? but might that effect the oil slinging for the spider gears?

seems more of a hassle than it's worth.

Main thing is use a non-C clip axle. They take curb hops better! I hand greased mine and dropped out the guts and replaced them with a thick pipe with a spacer inside between the ends and a grease nipple. You could put a bearing inside the side carrier races for extra strength but I hauled 1,000 lb loads of scrap that way.

Get your self some CJ/Scout spindles and hubs and weld them on a tube
and you will have an axle for a trailer. I've done it twice. works great.

Chevy Sprint is the only tiny car I have ever seen with a leaf spring suspension; I grabbed a rear out of one a while back to make a little trailer. It's perfect.

Only picture I have.

Or the rear spindles out of a chevy celebrity, pontic 6000 or similar are a four bolt mount and would be easy to use for a trailer.
