Chevy Diesel

I am looking at getting a chevy truck to use as a tow rig, for other peoples jeeps.

How are the Diesel motors in the 97 3500s? I am guessing its a 6.5l right?

Also how will it be towing, I am sure being a 1ton, and diesel it will tow a single jeep just fine, and more!

My grandfather was a mechanic and i also wanted to buy an old chevy diesel... dont get the 90's model Chevy diesels. They were built off a 350 block i think that is what it was he said. He had them in the shop everyday. Ide go with a Cummins or a powerstroke before ide ever go Chevy.

I am reading some very good forums and write up on them and they dont really scare me. The seem to have a bad rep by people treating them like cummins or duramaxs, and thats how people will screw up.

As long as you treat it like a truck, and do maintenance they seem to last. We will see though, going to look over this one very well. Make sure it was taken care of, and make sure it is in good working order.

I was thinking of buying one a couple months ago. Everyone i talked to said they didnt have any power and I would be better off buying a chevy with a 454 in it. I ended up getting a 99 f350 powerstroke for $5600.

Of the few people I have known that owned them, they all said the best day of ownership was the day they sold it. If you're set on a truck in the 90s look for a 7.3 or 12v cummins, otherwise look for a Dmax

The only way someone would trade him a 12v cummins for his XJ is if the truck was disintegrating around the motor.

I have a jeep on 35s with stock gears...I dont care about power or speed.

If I had money I would get a cummins, to bad the cheapest around here is close to 12k and in crappy condition. So no thanks...

As long as I keep up with maintenance, which I do with everything. Then it should be perfect for me, that way I dont speed anymore.

too bad we dont have the cool double middle finger like pirate,

Anyway bottom line is if you like the truck then who cares what other people think, for the most part people are stuck in their ways on what brands they like, and you hit the nail on the head before more then anything it how it was taken care off, beat any truck its not gunna last, and every brand has its own problems

So many people to thank here's a start to the list
Spidertrax, Yukon, rustys, warn, branik, PSC, advance adapters, Bad wheels, interco, essentially off-road. And many more

Most of all thanks too Ian Johnson and the xtreme off-road crew for all their work, and 4 wheel to heal for their part in it too.

Yeah thanks man, and I know I coulda used that finger big time.

I hope it all works out, if not I will just keep the piece. Maybe even post it once on craigslist to see if anyone has any other trucks they would want to trade.

Nope, those diesels were phased out in the 80s and never made their way into a 1 ton pickup. They were based on the 350 Oldsmobile gasjob but with a heavier block, crank, heads, etc. They were problematic because people didn't know anything about maintaining a diesel!

The trucks used a different diesel. The "square" chevy trucks and the first year or two of the 89,90 trucks used the mechanical injection 6.2. After that they switched to a fly by wire electronic 6.5 turbo diesel.
