7.3L Powerstroke Longevity?

Ford Powerstroke Guru's:

I'm looking for a tow rig and I have a good friend who recently bought a newer Duramax, so he is looking to sell his used Powerstroke for what seems to be a great deal. He owns a construction company and he uses his trucks to drive to jobsites all over the west so he racks up a lot of highway miles, but I know he maintains his vehicles well.

Anyway, it's a 2002 Ford F-250 Supercab, 7.3L Diesel, 6 speed manual, with about 250,000 miles on the clock. He says he'll sell it to me for around $2000, which is way below blue book.

Is this as good of a deal as it seems to be? How many miles are you guys getting out of the 7.3L? Any potential problems to look out for?

Thanks;

Joe

$2000 is all? BUY IT!!!!
With proper maintenance you should get at least another 100k out of it. For that price you can't go wrong.

Buy it, if you don't like it turn around and sell it for 6-8 and pocket the difference.
The the 7.3 is a proven engine, they can run a long time. 2 grand is a STEAL for a truck that new.

I also say buy it. I have a '95 7.3L powerstroke with 215,000 that I paid 5000 for out the door and it runs excellent. I have seen them with 400,000 or more running around as long as they're taken care of. Changing the oil at 3000 miles is a must. Maint. is more than a gasser but for that price I would buy it even with the truck I have now.

Only thing I would do immediately is buy a CPS sensor, a 10mm wrench, and a flat head screwdriver and put them in your glovebox. The sensor is about 20-25 bucks from any Ford Dealership or can be found around 15 online. This sensor goes out without warning and you will not be able to start the truck. The way to diagnose this is when you crank the engine and the Tach doesn't move. The procedure is easy to change it yourself. Better yet put in a new one and keep the old one as a spare. About the only problem besides the auto tranny's is the CPS but you have a manual which negates the auto problem. Try Ford-trucks.com and look through their forums.

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely can't pass up the deal.

Hopefully I'll be one of the lucky ones who get 400,000+.

That's a deal. So you pay 2000 for the truck, and then after a while the trans goes out, so you pay 2k for one of those, then you're still good.

I have an 02 350 PSD. Although I have not accumulated 250K yet I worry not abouyt getting there. As mentioned, even if the tranny goes bye
bye.. which being a manual the clutch might but tranny should last. Then say he beat hell from it. replace it and party on. You are getting a good deal. again as mentioned Aussies are looking hard for them. Sounds like a good find.

FYI on the mileage question.
1999 F350 7.3, 185k, bulletproof truck.
Just towed my "new" 89 JY four wheels down 300 km through the mountains and hardly noticed that it was there.
Drive the truck reasonably and I get as much as 23 mi per gallon (Canadian gallons) when not towing. That's just a bonus!

Just wondering was that a 4x ? That is a great deal either way. 7.3s go forever but the autos are weak. 6.0s hardly go but have a great trans, 6.4 who knows....but they sure cost a pretty dime.

yeah 7.3's are real good. Even if the motor blows, that truck is still worth 2k. snatch that thing up!

a friend of mine has a '95 powerstroke with the old 5-spd manual and close to 200k. Still runs like brand new. I'd take a 7.3 turbo over any new diesel on the market.
